The first daughter of Ghana’s first President in the fourth republic, Dr. Zanetor Agyemang Rawlings has defended passionately the 31st December revolution and the June 4th uprising led by her father, late H.E. Jerry John Rawlings.

According to her, both events happened as a result of high opulence, corruption and arrogance exhibited by political officers holders at the time.

This, according to her, did not sit well with the masses.

The military heeded the cry of the masses and had to step in to take over the administration of the country.

Even though, the exercise was not carried out by the military alone, she said, there was massive participation of lawyers, doctors, traders and other professionals across the country calling for the return of military rule due to the high level of corruption in government.

Dr. Zanetor Agyemang Rawlings who is the current Member of Parliament (MP) for Korle Klottey constituency in the Greater Accra Region made this statement at the 44th Anniversary commemoration held at Ada in the Ada East Municipality of the Greater Accra Region on Wednesday.

She urged government appointees to thread cautiously and learn from the mistakes of the past.

Dr. Zanetor called on them to desist from lavish lifestyle and listen to the concerns of the people who gave them the power.

She indicated that both events marked the foundation of Ghana’s democracy.

For her, the ten years of Provisional National Defense Council (PNDC) regime used to build the foundation and peace we are enjoying under the 4th republic today.

In her address, the Vice President Prof. Opoku-Agyemang paid tribute to the visionary leaders and unsung heroes who spearheaded the revolution, driven by an unflinching commitment to place Ghana’s interests above all else.

She honored the courage and conviction of the ordinary citizens and soldiers who, though their names may remain unknown, played a vital role in shaping the country’s trajectory.

Conveying warm greetings from President John Dramani Mahama, the Vice President extended heartfelt wishes for a reflective and joyous New Year to all Ghanaians. She lauded the participants of the parade, particularly the children, whose presence underscored the imperative of preserving and passing on the nation’s cherished values to future generations.

“The stability of our nation depends on each of us – how we treat one another, hold ourselves accountable, and stay committed to building a country that works for everyone,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang emphasized.

She reiterated that the 31st December Revolution was a collective endeavor to forge a just, caring, and responsible society, and that this noble duty remains a pressing imperative for all Ghanaians today.

Gleefully,as Ghana embarks on a new year, the Vice President’s message was clear: unity, principle, and an unwavering dedication to Ghana’s progress must remain the guiding forces propelling the country forward.

“Let us move forward together, united by purpose, guided by principle, and committed to leaving Ghana better than we found her,” she declared.
