Gov’t Set to Roll Out 1,500 Transformers to Boost Power Stability

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has unveiled plans to deploy approximately 1,500 new transformers across the country by the end of March.

This initiative aims to fortify the country’s power distribution network and mitigate persistent power fluctuations.

Addressing the launch of the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) new corporate strategy in Accra, Dr. Jinapor emphasized that this move is crucial in enhancing electricity distribution and meeting escalating consumer demand.

“Consumers expect reliable electricity, especially when tariffs are going up. It should not be the case that immediately you connect to the grid, the power goes off,” he stressed.

The government intervened to facilitate the procurement of the transformers after ECG faced financial constraints. Dr. Jinapor assured that the deployment would commence by the end of March, with some ageing equipment slated for replacement to bolster the distribution network’s reliability.

ECG’s Acting Managing Director, Julius Kpekpena, hailed the new corporate strategy as a transformative roadmap, prioritizing operational modernization, technological integration, and revenue mobilization.

He also highlighted efforts to curb power theft and illegal connections, which have long plagued the company’s financial stability.

This development forms part of broader reforms aimed at enhancing power reliability and restoring financial discipline within Ghana’s electricity distribution sector.
