ECOWAS Unanimously Backs John Dramani Mahama for AU Chairpersonship

ECOWAS has thrown its weight behind President John Dramani Mahama as West Africa’s sole candidate for the African Union (AU) Chairpersonship in 2027.

The unanimous endorsement came from the ECOWAS Council of Ministers during its 95th ordinary session in Abuja, Nigeria.

The council’s recommendation will now be forwarded to the Authority of Heads of State and Government for adoption on Sunday, December 14, 2025.

ECOWAS expressed gratitude to member states for supporting Ghana’s candidacy, highlighting the country’s contributions to the region and its international standing.

In a statement, ECOWAS noted its commitment to promoting the interests of the region in international and continental organizations. The endorsement aligns with ECOWAS’ determination to support candidates from member states, strengthening its influence and presence in regional and global bodies, including the African Union.

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, thanked fellow ministers for their unanimous support, saying, “Ghana is exceedingly grateful to ECOWAS for the confidence and support for our beloved visionary and Pan-African President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama. Ghana shall keep making Africa proud.
