Ghana is the benchmark of sustainable mining – Land Minister to subregion

Ghana has emerged as a trendsetter in sustainable mining within the West African subregion, according to the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources,Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah.
Speaking at the launch of the West Africa Mining and Power Expo (WAMPEX) 2025, Armah-Kofi Buah highlighted the country’s enviable success in the extractive sector, attributing it to the country’s robust policies and commitment to responsible resource development.
“We are proof that responsible investment and transformative development can go hand in hand,” Armah-Kofi Buah emphasized, adding that Ghana’s stable democracy, skilled workforce, and investor-friendly environment have attracted approximately $1.2 billion in foreign direct investment in mining last year alone.
He also underscored the positive impact of mining on local communities, revealing that 100 mining communities are directly benefiting from the Mineral Development Fund.
This initiative, he noted, marks a significant shift from corporate social responsibility to genuine shared value.
Ghana’s success in sustainable mining can be attributed to four strategic pillars, namely investor confidence, community impact, environmental stewardship, and transparent governance, according to Armah-Kofi Buah.
He urged other countries to emulate Ghana’s model, stressing that “our doors are open, our policies are clear, and our commitment is unwavering.”
Armah-Kofi Buah’s sentiments were echoed by the Chairman of the Conference and President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Michael Edem Akafia Esq, who emphasized the importance of responding decisively to the call for sustainable development.
The CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Ahmed Dasana Nantogmah, also highlighted the significance of this year’s theme, “The Mining and Power Hub: Driving Sustainable Investment Opportunities in West Africa.”
As WAMPEX 2025 continues in Accra, industry stakeholders and government officials are converging to discuss the latest developments, exchange ideas, and explore future investment opportunities in the mining and power sectors. Hon.Armah- Kofi Buah concluded by charging that “let WAMPEX 2025 be remembered as the moment we turned promise into practice, where sustainable deals were struck, transformative partnerships formed, and West Africa’s mining future was forever changed.”
