NDC Media Analyst Group Backs Petition to Remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo

The Media Analyst Group of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has publicly declared its support for a petition seeking the removal of Ghana’s Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Gertrude Torkornoo, over what it describes as growing concerns about judicial bias and misconduct.

In a statement released on Tuesday, April 16, the group accused the Chief Justice of compromising the integrity of the judiciary through her handling of key political and constitutional cases.

According to the group, the Chief Justice’s conduct has led to a “loss of public confidence in the Supreme Court” and threatens the very foundation of Ghana’s democratic order.

“We are fully behind the call for her removal,” the statement read. “The perception of partiality and inconsistency in her rulings cannot be ignored any longer.”

The group organizer, Mr. Simon Yaw Awadzi, pointed to Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution as the legitimate process for removing a sitting Chief Justice. They are urging the President and the Council of State to ensure a fair, thorough, and transparent inquiry into the allegations.

They also issued a strong call to action, encouraging Ghanaians to rally behind what they describe as an effort to restore public trust in the judiciary.

“We cannot remain silent while the courts are used to advance narrow political interests. Ghana deserves better,” the statement said.

Neither the Chief Justice nor the Judicial Service has issued an official response to the claims, though legal observers anticipate strong public debate in the coming days.

The petition and the NDC’s support for it are expected to further fuel tensions between the opposition party and state institutions as the country edges closer to the 2026 general elections.
