Arise Ghana rejects third-term calls for President Mahama

Arise Ghana, a group that seeks to defend the collective interests of Ghanaians, amplify the voices of the marginalised, and actively pursue essential social, economic, and political reforms, has strongly rejected growing calls for a third term for President John Dramani Mahama.

The group warned that such a move would undermine Ghana’s democratic principles and threaten national stability.

According to them any attempt to extend the President’s tenure beyond the constitutionally prescribed limits would violate the 1992 Constitution and weaken the country’s democratic foundations.

Addressing a press conference in Accra as part of an independent assessment of the Mahama administration’s first year in office, the Co-Convener of Arise Ghana, Marion Gifty Nyaaba, cautioned against efforts to promote or normalise discussions around a third-term presidency.

“Let us be clear, whispers of third-term extensions are unconstitutional, unwarranted, and perilous. They erode democratic norms and invite instability,” she stated, urging Ghanaians to reject such ideas unequivocally.

She stressed that Ghana’s democracy thrives on strong institutions rather than the perpetuation of political leadership, warning against the personalisation of power.

“Ghana needs institutional strength, not perpetual leaders,” she said, adding that President Mahama should focus on effective governance within his constitutionally mandated tenure.

She further urged President Mahama to respect constitutional term limits and exit office at the appropriate time, noting that adherence to the constitution would secure his place in history.

“President Mahama should lead effectively and exit gracefully, securing his legacy,” she added.
