The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has declared that Mr. Umar Sanda has automatically forfeited his membership of the party after announcing his decision to contest the upcoming Ayawaso East Constituency by-election as an independent candidate.
In a letter dated February 17, 2026, and signed by the General Secretary of the party, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC stated that Mr. Sanda’s action is in direct contravention of the party’s constitution and its collective decision to field a duly elected candidate for the by-election scheduled for March 3, 2026.
The letter explained that by breaking ranks and contesting against the officially endorsed NDC candidate, Mr. Sanda had, in accordance with the provisions of the party’s constitution, automatically forfeited his membership with immediate effect.
“You have, in accordance with the provisions of the Party’s Constitution, automatically forfeited your membership of the Party with immediate effect,” the statement read.
The party further notified Mr. Sanda that he is prohibited from using the NDC’s name, logo, colours, insignia, symbols, or any other intellectual property associated with the party in the course of his campaign or any related political activity.
The decision underscores the NDC’s stance on party discipline and internal cohesion ahead of the Ayawaso East by-election, as political parties intensify preparations for the poll.
The development is expected to shape the dynamics of the upcoming by-election in the constituency.
