The United States Embassy in Ghana has officially confirmed the reversal of visa restrictions. This move restores the maximum validity periods for all categories of non-immigrant visas for Ghanaian citizens.
The confirmation from the U.S. Embassy in Accra follows an earlier announcement by Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who had declared a “big win” for the country after months of diplomatic negotiations.
In a public statement, the U.S. Embassy announced: “The U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce that the maximum validity periods for all categories of nonimmigrant visas for Ghanaians have been restored to their previous lengths.”
The specific, beneficial changes confirmed by the Embassy are:
The maximum validity allowed for the B1/B2 (visitor visa) is again five years, multiple entry.
The maximum validity for the F1 (student visa) is again four years, multiple entry.
This reversal replaces the strict restrictions imposed in July of this year by the Trump Administration, which had limited most non-immigrant visas for Ghanaians to a maximum of three months and a single entry. The restrictions were cited by the U.S. as a response to concerns over visa overstays.
The restoration of the multi-year, multiple-entry visas is expected to significantly ease travel, business, and educational opportunities between Ghana and the United States, underscoring what Minister Ablakwa referred to as “healthier and stronger Ghana-USA relations.”
