Zongo Women Leader Urges Peace Amid Fatal Dormitory Killings of SHS Students

Accra – The Greater Accra Regional Zongo Women Caucus Leader (Magajiya), Hajia Lami Ibrahim, has made a heartfelt appeal to women – especially those in conflict-prone areas like Bawku and surrounding zones – to play critical roles in restoring peace and preventing further loss of young lives.
Speaking with Nana Kwasi Roka of Al Hajj News at her office in Accra, Hajia Lami expressed profound grief over the recent dormitory shootings that claimed the lives of three Senior High School students – two at Nalerigu SHS in the North East Region and one at Bawku SHS in the Upper East Region .
Two of the victims – Lukman and Gideon – were shot dead inside their dormitory at Nalerigu SHS and an 18‑year‑old final‑year student, Hakim Kundima, was abducted and killed after being dragged from his dorm at Bawku SHS .
Hajia Lami, speaking as a mother, lamented:
“Seeing schoolchildren murdered in cold blood like animals in their dormitories makes my heart bleed.”
She stressed that women are spiritually and morally equipped to diffuse hostility and urged them to use their influence to guide their husbands, brothers and sons toward peace.
“In situations like this, women and children suffer the most – and as a mother, I cannot remain silent,” she emphasized. “Let us stand up as the women we are, humbly offer our husbands and brothers peaceful advice, persuade and convince them to embrace peace to bring a lasting solution to the canker.”
Hajia also called on communities to collaborate with government and security forces deployed to Dagbon and affected areas to foster peace and pave the way for development.
The Bawku conflict – rooted in a decades‑long chieftaincy dispute between Kusasi and Mamprusi groups – has escalated in recent days, prompting government deployment of troops, imposition of a curfew and an emergency evacuation of students from schools in Nalerigu and Bawku .
Civil society groups like Africa Education Watch have condemned the dormitory killings as a shocking violation of students’ safety and the sanctity of educational institutions, urging immediate investigations and protective measures for schools in conflict zones .
As the national discourse turns toward reconciliation and peacebuilding, Hajia Lami’s call to women emerges as a moral clarion – to guide their communities away from violence and toward healing.
