Mahama’s Economic Rescue Mission Hailed by Ato Forson – Says Ghana Was a Crime Scene Under Akufo-Addo

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has commended President John Dramani Mahama for steering Ghana towards economic stability, describing his leadership as a much-needed rescue mission after what he called the “economic crime scene” left behind by the Akufo-Addo administration.
Delivering the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament on Wednesday, Dr. Forson painted a grim picture of the state of the economy when the Mahama government assumed office on January 7. According to him, they inherited a broken financial sector riddled with non-performing loans, a collapsing IMF programme and skyrocketing inflation driven by mismanagement at the Bank of Ghana.
“Indeed, as President Mahama said, the whole of Ghana was a crime scene,” Dr. Forson emphasized, accusing the previous government of gross economic mismanagement and incompetence.
He did not mince words in blaming the Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration for eroding investor confidence, burdening the country with reckless spending and leaving behind a deeply fragile economy.
In contrast, Dr. Forson highlighted the strides made under Mahama’s leadership. “We have made significant progress; the signs of recovery are visible,” he noted, pointing to ongoing structural reforms, renewed fiscal discipline and efforts aimed at long-term economic transformation.
The Finance Minister’s remarks underscore the Mahama administration’s commitment to restoring Ghana’s economic credibility – a task he described as both urgent and achievable, given the bold reforms already underway.
As the country moves through the second half of 2025, Dr. Forson expressed optimism that Mahama’s policies are laying a solid foundation for sustained growth and national prosperity.
