Transport Fares to Drop as GPRTU Hints at Relief for Commuters

Commuters in Ghana may soon breathe a sigh of relief as the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) hints at an imminent reduction in transport fares.
According to Abass Imoro, the union’s Industrial Relations Officer, ongoing negotiations with the Ministry of Transport are nearing a conclusion, with a final meeting scheduled for Tuesday, May 20.
Speaking to Channel One News, Imoro revealed that the talks have been productive, with both parties closing in on a mutually beneficial agreement.
“It was a marathon meeting,” he said. “The Transport Ministry is looking for some percentage, and the transport operators are also looking for some percentage. Finally, we closed halfway. We are going back, and tomorrow we will come and meet them on the final decision.”
Imoro assured the public that the outcome of the meeting would bring significant relief to commuters, with transport fares reflecting the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi.
“The meeting is about the reduction in fares, so the public should rest assured that we will give them a smiley reduction,” he added.
The development comes as a welcome respite for commuters who have been grappling with high transport costs. Undeniably, with the cedi’s recent gains against the US dollar, transport operators are under pressure to adjust their fares accordingly.
The GPRTU’s hint at an imminent reduction is a positive sign, and commuters can look forward to some relief in the coming days.
