IGP Initiates Command Reshuffle in Galamsey hotspot

The Ghana Police Service under the leadership of the IGP Christian Tetteh Yahuno has initiated a significant reshuffle of commanders in areas plagued by illegal mining, underscoring its unwavering commitment to combating this menace.
This strategic move, affecting key regions including the Eastern South, Western, and Western North Police Regions, marks the beginning of a nationwide overhaul aimed at injecting fresh momentum into the fight against galamsey.
In a related development, the Police Service has made notable strides in its battle against illegal mining. A four-day intelligence-led operation, launched on April 17, 2025, in the Samreboi enclave of the Western Region, has resulted in the arrest of 47 individuals involved in illicit mining activities along the Tano River and within the Aboi, Subri, and Nimiri forests. The suspects comprise 39 Ghanaians, eight Chinese nationals, and four women.
The operation has yielded substantial seizures, including seventeen excavators, one bulldozer, four motorbikes, two Toyota Hilux vehicles, one Toyota RAV4 vehicle, four pump-action guns, one single-barrel gun, fifty-four live BB cartridges, and eight pumping machines. All suspects are currently in custody, facing processing according to the law as investigations continue.
The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has reaffirmed the Police Service’s determination to dismantle illegal mining networks and protect the country’s natural resources.
Further reshuffles and operations are planned as part of a broader strategy to tackle this pressing issue.
This decisive action demonstrates the Ghana Police Service’s commitment to safeguarding the country’s environment and upholding the rule of law.
