GJA Hails Arrest of Ahmed Suale Murder Suspect, Demands Full Justice

Accra, March 20, 2025 – The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has applauded the Ghana Police Service for arresting a suspect linked to the 2019 murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale, describing the move as a “major breakthrough” in the long fight for justice.
The suspect, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Amakye, was arraigned before the Madina District Court on March 19, 2025, and remanded into police custody to reappear on April 1, 2025.
In a statement, GJA General Secretary Kofi Yeboah commended Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno and CID Director-General DCOP Lydia Yakubo Donkor for their roles in the arrest. However, he stressed that the police must not “relax after this initial success” but rather ensure a comprehensive prosecution.
“This arrest is the first real step in six years towards justice for Ahmed Suale,” Yeboah said. “But justice is not just about arresting suspects; it’s about securing convictions and dismantling impunity against journalists.”
The GJA noted that the inability to find Suale’s killers had been a stain on Ghana’s press freedom record, as documented in global reports. The association has vowed to continue monitoring the case and has warned that if significant progress is not seen by the end of March 2025, it will escalate the matter to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice.
Additionally, GJA has informed its international partners, including the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), who have also pledged to push for justice on global platforms.
While welcoming this progress, the GJA insists that the fight is far from over. “We will not rest until all those responsible for Ahmed Suale’s murder face the full force of the law,” Yeboah declared.
