Ghanaians Impressed with President Mahama’s First State of the Nation Address (SONA)

Ghanaians have expressed widespread admiration for President John Dramani Mahama’s inaugural State of the Nation Address (SONA) since assuming office in January 2025. The address, delivered to Parliament on Thursday, 27th February 2025, outlined the government’s strategic priorities and vision for the nation, marking a significant moment in his administration.
In an exclusive interview with ghanaiandemocrat.com, citizens from various sectors shared their thoughts on the President’s address, highlighting its clarity, relevance, and hopeful tone that resonated throughout the speech. Many praised Mahama’s commitment to addressing pressing national issues, including economic recovery, healthcare, education, and infrastructure development.
“President Mahama’s speech was refreshing and filled with optimism,” said Ama Asante, a teacher based in Accra. “He acknowledged the challenges we face as a nation but also laid out a concrete plan for how to tackle them. It felt like he truly understood what Ghanaians were going through.”
One of the key themes of the address was the emphasis on economic revitalization. Mahama outlined strategic initiatives aimed at boosting local businesses, enhancing trade, and attracting foreign investment. He announced plans to implement tax incentives for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and to support agricultural modernization, which he described as the backbone of the Ghanaian economy.
“I was particularly impressed with the focus on supporting SMEs,” noted Kwame Owusu, an entrepreneur. “These businesses are vital for job creation, and it’s about time they received the backing they need. The proposed tax incentives could make a significant difference for many of us trying to grow our businesses.”
The President also addressed the ongoing challenges in the healthcare sector. He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and increasing access to medical services across the country. Mahama announced plans for the construction of the finishing of agenda 111 healthcare facilities and the recruitment of more healthcare professionals to ensure that every Ghanaian has access to quality healthcare.
“This is a crucial step forward,” stated Dr. Selina Mensah, a medical practitioner. “The COVID 19 pandemic highlighted the weaknesses in our healthcare system, and it’s reassuring to hear the President prioritizing this area. We need a robust healthcare system to tackle not just COVID-19 but other health issues as well.”
In the education sector, Mahama outlined initiatives aimed at improving the quality of education and addressing the challenges posed by outdated curricula. He announced plans to invest in teacher training and development, free SHS as well as the introduction of digital learning tools to enhance the learning experience for students.
Parents and educators have welcomed these initiatives, recognizing the need for a modernized educational system that prepares students for the future. “Education is the foundation of our society,” said Abena Asanteewaa, a parent. “I appreciate the focus on improving teacher training and incorporating technology into the classroom. Our children deserve the best education possible.”
Infrastructure development was another significant aspect of Mahama’s address. He announced a comprehensive plan to upgrade roads, bridges, and public transport systems across the country. “Good infrastructure is essential for economic growth,” remarked Samuel Adjei, a civil engineer. “Investing in our roads and public transport will facilitate trade and make it easier for people to access jobs and services.”
As the address concluded, Mahama called for unity and collaboration among all Ghanaians to achieve these ambitious goals. He urged citizens to support government initiatives and actively participate in the decision-making processes that affect their communities.
The positive reception of Mahama’s SONA reflects a collective hope for a brighter future among Ghanaians. Many believe that with strong leadership and a clear vision, the nation can overcome its challenges and build a prosperous society for all.
The address has set a promising tone for the rest of the year, and citizens are eager to see how the government will turn its plans into action. As Ghana looks forward to a new chapter under President Mahama’s leadership, the call for collaboration and unity resonates strongly, reminding everyone of their shared responsibility in shaping the future of the nation.
