Ghanaian Times’ Raissa Sambou wins GJA’s Most Promising Journalist Award

A Ghanaian Times journalist, Mrs. Raissa Sambou, has been named winner of the Most Promising Komla Dumor Journalist of the Year award at the 25th Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) awards ceremony.
She also emerged winner of the Child Protection and Participation, print category.
The Most Promising Komla Dumor Journalist award was established to honour Komla Dumor, a Ghanaian presenter for BBC World News, who died suddenly aged 41 in 2014.
The GJA Awards provides a platform to recognize individuals and companies that play significant roles in the growth and development of the industry.
It identifies important functions within the industry that promote growth.
The annual awards scheme cuts across Business and Financial Reporting, Feature and Magazine Writing, Broadcast, Environmental Journalism, Global and International Journalism, Online or Multi-Media Journalism and Photojournalism and News Reporting.
About 67 awards were given to journalists and media houses in the country.
The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Affail Monney, said the association believed the media had a crucial role to play in ensuring credible elections at all times and that the COVID-19 pandemic must not deter the media.
“We, however, need the support of other election actors such as the Electoral Commission (EC), political parties, security agencies and civil society organisations to help us achieve credible elections in December.”
The Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC),Mr Yaw Boadu-Ayeboafoh, said the media has an onerous task to inform voters about the various policies and campaign promises of the political parties ahead of the elections.
Speaking with the press on the award, Ms Sambou said Mr Dumor was someone she revered when she was a student and listened to his programmes from his days at Joyfm and BBC Focus on Africa.
She said she is challenged to produce more unbiased quality works.
Raissa Sambou, who holds a degree in Journalism from the Jayee University College, affiliated to University of Education, Winneba, is also a recipient of several other awards.
The ceremony was held under the theme, ‘COVID-19 and credible presidential and parliamentary elections: The media factor’.
